Following my other series for #The100DayProject — #100DaysofOutfitSketches in 2015 and #100Daysof3WordCollages in 2017 — I decided to play around with collages again, but make silly little movements, completing this series in 2018.
Since these were posted on Instagram, I created collages in a row by threes, following a specific theme or color palette and using similar elements at a time to make the pieces look cohesive. I used stock images mostly from Unsplash, and played around with composition and small repetitive movements to make the collages loop and come alive.
Some collages I would use my own photos to make, including this last row above of an artwork called Yellow Line by @myungaelee from an exhibit we visited during our trip to Nami Island in Korea, last December 2017. I also used a few of my film photos when they fit the color palette I intended for the small sets of 3s.
Being a huge fan of BTS, it was inevitable for me to make moving collages inspired by them. I made these for my 1st ARMYversary in 2018, using clips from their latest MV release then called Euphoria. I also made another row inspired by the MV of Singularity by V. I played around a lot with composition and seeing the elements in a row helped me balance it well.
A lot of my entries for this project are very timely, including this next piece which I posted for Mother's Day with a photo of my mom during our trip to Korea the year before I posted this. I also played around with stock materials I have collected over the years making digital collages including flowers, tapes, and stamps.
Another set of BTS-inspired collages from the Fake Love MV released during this time. Instead of just 1 row, I made 6 posts for this set, one for each member except for Jungkook in the frame because he's part of each of their stories, alluding to the storyline of the music video itself. The next row was used as spot collages for the website timeline I made: www.bangtanfor.life
In most cases, I scroll through Unsplash and gather all the images that speak to me. It's similar to scanning through a magazine and finding elements you want in a collage, but this time on a wider scale.
I integrated a lot of stock elements including those from the British Library images that are free to be used for collages to make more interesting compositions. I almost always pair them with Unsplash images. These are a few of my favorites.
In most cases I gather images that fit in a specific color palette and work from there. Although they always don't fit a specific theme, I still appreciate seeing the colors fit together in a set with one another.
In most cases, animations don't need to be too extravagant or grand. Small little movements that you notice only the longer you look at a collage piece works as well. This set I made with crabs with RM in mind, with some easter egg details including his birthday hehe.
Having a lot of images was always a dilemma for me because I would really want to utilize them for a set. This alternating reveal animation that also still loops allows me to feature a bunch of photos I've gathered that I think would fit in a set.
I did a lot more of these revealing animations from subtle movements to bigger ones that include the entire background moving. I like to play around with shapes and elements that don't exactly fit together, as well as silhouettes and tiny people so these are also a few of my favorite pieces from this series.
All of these pieces are untitled, mostly because I am not good with words and would prefer to let my work speak for itself.
Always playing around with orientation to facilitate movement, I try to break lines and work with grids and patterns as well.
Overlapping images have also been a theme throughout my project, but this piece with the hand, the butterflies, and the tiny people, with the light from a window overlapping with the lines from the pavement will always be a special piece for me. I would like to think that it's still well-composed and balanced despite all the things happening all at once.
Working with different elements and color palettes has made this project extremely fun for me despite having the additional step of figuring out the elements that would move and how it would loop.
Took me almost the entire year to finish all of these (posted on @andilanuza on Instagram from April 16 to December 9, 2018), but this is still one of the most fulfilling personal projects I've done so far.
